AOB4-Research report for music video
Research and my reasons for doing it
My research was to establish the forms/conventions of music videos to help me with creating one of my own for the band, Linkin Park. I needed to establish the usual things that you would see in a music video and in particular find out how Linkin Park usually make their videos. I carried out a survey to find ask people what they wanted/expected from a music video and collated the information in the form of pie charts and a brief written summary. I also carried out my own research by looking on the internet at other videos of a similar genre to note the conventions. I looked on the web for hints and tips on shooting a music video. e.g camera angles, lighting, special effects etc. I read through the lyrics of the song for which I am making the music video in order to establish the story that was being told and any hidden meanings e.g reading between the lines. This helped me to decide on the imagery and ideas for the content of my video. I created a mood board which helped me bring the important details together and presented my ideas to a focus group.
Findings from my research
I found that by looking at Linkin Park videos, that most of them have very dark and heavy themes to them. The screen is full of action and movement and dark colours are used. The band do perform in their videos but this is usually mixed with narrative and special effects. I found that this is typical of the genre and the artist. The videos are aimed at their target audience and would not appeal to the older viewer. The attitude of the band is very serious, strong and powerful and the imagery reflects this. Their dress can vary from very dark clothing to casual and everyday looking and this also depends on the individual video.
How my research affects my idea
My research has affected my idea for my music video in that I thought that I might try to portray the band in a slightly different light. The video is to be made for a track called 'Runaway' which gives you the feeling of someone wanting to run away from their troubled life. My interpretation of the lyrics was of a couple who are at odds with each other and so I tried to base the video in a everyday setting e.g. house, street, park. A mix of band performance and narrative would be used and this would follow the conventions of the band and a good majority of other music videos. The presentation I did to a focus group went very well and the comments I got were positive. They said that I had included a nice mix of narrative and performance and this is something that my final piece would include. Some members of the focus group thought that the story line was too confusing and difficult to follow. Perhaps if I were to make this video I would not include so much detail making the story easier to follow.

AOB4-Feedback from focus group
I presented my music video treatment to the class. Within the class a focus group of 5 people gave me some written feedback. They were asked to write down 3 words that came to mind when thinking about the mood that the music video and the lyrics created. The responses I got were anger, lies, thoughts, confusion, running, escape, guilt, cinematic, sad, literal and chaotic. I feel that a high proportion of these words were a good indicator of the mood that I wanted the video to have. The comments that I received were generally along the lines of my video having a good mix of narrative and performance which follows the conventions of this music genre. I tried to be creative with my ideas by including special effects, like the band performing on the letter as it is taken from the envelope which people in my focus group said was a very good idea. Some of the members commented on what they perceived my use of a good use colours and images in the treatment.
On the negative side, some members of the focus group thought that the storyline was difficult to follow. However I am not sure that I agree with them. Maybe the use of a pictorial story board in subsequent focus groups would help get my ideas across without causing any confusion. I would have preferred the members in the focus group to be of a more varied age range as this would mean that there would be a more varied taste in music and therefore give a wider opinion on the video. My focus group was predominantly males and maybe the theme of my video e.g. a couple in a relationship who are at odds with each other, did not appeal to them. Maybe a focus group consisting of more girls would have given me a different response. The target audience for Linkin Park is definitely male dominated and so the theme of my video did not appeal to their taste.
The focus group commented in a positive way on my presentational skills saying that I looked at the audience while talking and tried not to read directly from the blog.
To sum up, I feel my idea of the video was well received and I am pleased with the feedback.

AOB4-Questionnaire analysis
In order to obtain views and opinions on music videos I put together a questionnaire in the hopes that I will find out what the general public like and want to see in the video.
Most of the people who completed my questionnaire said that they liked to see real people in music videos that they could relate to. One person said that they like to see gangsters in music videos too. Most said that they preferred the video to follow a story and all but one expressed a dislike to videos that they have seen in the past. This particular person said that he really disliked anything produced by Lionel Ritchie. He's a man........ ! Lionel Ritchie appeals to women! Favourite videos seen in the past are Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel, Smack my/your!!? Bitch up (quote from questionnaire) and that Lego one by White Stripes.
The rest of the information gathered from my questionnaires are shown in Pie Charts on my blog.
